Delta Flight Evacuated on Slides After Snowy Atlanta Takeoff Is Aborted

Passenger Curtis James reported seeing an engine fire, prompting the emergency evacuation using slides during Atlanta’s unusual snowy weather. Videos and photos captured passengers exiting the Boeing 757 and gathering on the snowy tarmac.
Delta stated that the flight crew followed procedures after detecting an engine problem before takeoff. The aircraft, traveling at approximately 100 mph, came to a halt halfway down the runway. Officials have not confirmed if the engine issue involved a fire.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the event, though the latter has not officially launched a full investigation.
Winter weather, which has disrupted over 400 flights at Atlanta’s airport and thousands nationwide, compounded the challenges. Evacuated passengers were transported back to the terminal.
