Beechcraft Bonanza Crash in Clearwater, FL Claims Three Lives: A Tragic Incident Amidst the Aircraft’s Storied Legacy

The Beechcraft V35B Bonanza, a single-engine aircraft known for its distinctive design and reliability, was involved in a devastating crash in Clearwater, FL, on the evening of February 1. This particular aircraft, with registration N6659L, belonged to Control Data, Inc. of Indianapolis, Indiana, and was powered by a Continental O-520 engine. The incident unfolded as the aircraft, en route to Clearwater-Executive Airport, encountered an engine failure about three miles north of its destination, leading to a tragic crash into the Bayside Waters mobile home park. The crash claimed the lives of the pilot and two individuals in the mobile home, as detailed in reports by the Tampa Bay Times and available through the Aviation Safety Network.

An Aircraft With a Storied History

This accident brings to light the storied history of the Beechcraft Bonanza series, manufactured by Beech Aircraft Corporation of Wichita, KS, since 1947. As the longest continuously produced aircraft in history, the Bonanza has seen its share of notable incidents, including the deaths of rock and roll legend Buddy Holly in a Model 35, country musician Jim Reeves in a Debonair model, and guitarist Randy Rhoads in an F35 crash. In a testament to its survivability, Apple Computer’s co-founder Steve Wozniak was seriously injured but survived a crash in his own A36TC Bonanza.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), supported by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), will lead the investigation into this latest tragedy. Their findings will contribute to the ongoing understanding and safety improvements for the Beechcraft Bonanza series and aviation as a whole.
